Monastery of St. Catherine:
Just imagine – you are at the place where God gave the 10 Commandments. Tradition says that those who made the hard journey to Mount Sinai and met the dawn will receive absolution.
If you feel you can’t climb the mountain, you can rent a camel for $20.
Having met the dawn, you descend from the mountain and a sightseeing tour begins with our guide around the monastery of St. Catherine.
The monastery, located near Mount Moses, is named after St. Catherine, who was martyred for the Christian faith.
You will see and learn the history of the monastery complex: the thorn bush and the chapel of the Burning Bush, the Well of Moses, the Basilica of the Transfiguration – the main temple of the monastery, the crypt and cemetery, the Library and the monastery garden.
The Greek Orthodox monastery was built between 548 and 565 AD. The monastery has preserved its original appearance, having passed through the millennia.
According to legend, it is located in the very place where the Lord appeared to Moses in the Thorn Bush of the “Burning Bush”, enveloped in flames, and called him to bring the “sons of Israel” out of Egypt to the Promised Land.
This sacred bush was moved a few meters into the courtyard of the monastery, and the Annunciation Chapel with a silver star was built in its former place, indicating the place where the roots of the bush came out of the ground.
